Toby Richardson

Toby Richardson is a distinguished fashion designer renowned for his specialism in hand embroidery and garment construction, with a particular focus on 3D construction and the artful layering of diverse materials and techniques. Drawing inspiration from the intricate details found in natural elements, while examining the contrast between organic and man-made themes.

In previous projects, his research is deeply rooted in observation findings, as he intently studies the organic form of the intricate growth of fungal, mould cultivation, and bio networks through multiple sources, capturing the beauty of the natural world through fluid ink sketches, innovative fabric manipulations and beading, embroidery compositions. By merging these approaches, he creates sculptural, highly detailed garments that reflect both technical precision and imaginative expression.

A graduate of Birmingham City University with a BA Hons Fashion Design in 2024, Toby has already had the chance to work with prominent brands such as Superdry and intern as a garment technologist for the West Midlands Police Museum. These experiences have honoured him with the valuable knowledge of garment construction and given him insight into the intersection of fashion, functionality and the working ways of the fashion industry.

During his attendance with The Kings Foundation and the Métiers d’art fellowship, Toby has refined his technical and design skills of surface design with hand embroidery, learning and developing techniques in hand stitching, tambour embroidery, fabric manipulation and feather work. By obtaining this knowledge and going forward from the Métiers d’art fellowship, Toby strives to combine his extensive fashion knowledge and newfound couture embroidery knowledge to create extravagant fashion pieces
